Blasters go the desi way to woo Kerala fans

KOCHI: Footballers are known for their style statements. Whether it is a fancy hairdo or wacky tattoos footballers prefer to stand out from the rest.

However, Kochi's ISL team, Kerala Blasters, made a different sort of style statement here on Monday during the launch of team's logo.

Led by their marquee playercum-manager, David James, the team assembled on stage wearing a yellow Kerala Blasters T-shirt and a dhoti (mundu) with a golden border to it, a typical Kerala attire worn on festive occasions. Their adventure didn't end with that. The whole team including their talismanic striker Michael Chopra and Canadian Iain Hume, who had arrived in the city in the wee hours of the morning, dared to have a small footballing session on the hotel lawns wearing the dhoti.

Kerala Blasters unveil kit and logo

David James reveals that he wants to win the ISL for the people of Kerala in the first year itself, while Potluri claims the franchise belongs to the people of the southern state

Kerala Blasters on Monday unveiled their official kits as well as unveiled their logo ahead of the inaugural season of the Indian Super League (ISL), in Kochi.
The entire squad had gathered ahead of a select set of invitees to mark what they believe is the tru beginning of a new era for football in the football mad state of Kerala. Amongst the dignitaries were Prakash Potluri, co-owner of the franchise who deputized in his partner Sachin Tendulkar’s absence, K M I Mather, the Kerala Football Association’s (KFA) President and Kochi Mayor Tony Chambany. Also in presence were two of Kerala’s prodigal football sons, I M Vijayan and Jo Paul Anchery.
“Sachin and I are overwhelmed by the support to the Kerala Blasters by the people of Kerala. We are just the owners on record. The Kerala Blasters in owned by every football loving person in this state. This is your club,” roared Potluri.
It must be remarked that 21 of the 27 strong Kerala Blasters’ squad made it for unveiling with David James, marquee signing as well as player cum manager, Iain Hume and Michael Chopra, both new foreign recruits alongside Trevor Morgan, the coach.
James believed the pressure was all on Kerala Blasters to deliver to the folks who support them in God’s own country, in lieu of the state’s long standing association with the sport.
“We will try to uphold the traditions of Kerala and hopefully try to bring the trophy to the state. I know cricket is a strong sport in India, but now it’s football’s turn,” he elucidated.
The jersey was a bright canary Yellow, with the logo embossed on the right side. The logo, the mast of an elephant cradling a football in it’s trunk, is closely embedded with the culture of the state.
"The logo reflects the cultural and sporting legacy of Kerala symbolized by the elephant. The elephant is a symbol of strength and pride, rooted in its family and community, reflecting the aspiration and spirit of Kerala Blasters," revealed Potluri.
"Using the state animal, the elephant, as the starting point, we built an identity around it, reflecting its prominence in Kerala's culture," revealed the logo’s designer John Brash, founder of Brash Brands, who have claimed that extensive research of world football clubs’ logo’s had been done before a suitable choice was made.
The Blasters have already assembled for pre-season training at the Corporation ground, Thrissur.

Blasters read riot act to Kerala Police in 5-1 rout

David James tried up to three different formations as the Blasters gave playing time to a majority of their players...

In their very first outing as a team, the Kochi franchise of the Indian Super League (ISL), Kerala Blasters, battered their opponents Kerala Police, by a scoreline that read 5-1 to the Sachin Tendulkar co-owned franchise, at the Corporation stadium in the temple city of Thrissur.
David James, the player-cum-coach of Kerala Blasters didn’t take to the field as he was busy formulating a strategy with which his team operated efficiently. It is known he tried out close to three formations.
The match itself was a particular instance of a football game, with it divided into three segments of thirty minutes each. James, for this part decided to start with all the Indian recruits of the franchise bar Brazilian left-back Erwin Spitzner.
The Blasters acclimatized 19 of the available personnel, whilst assistant player-manager James McAllister tactically soaked in the game from the sidelines.
The first formation James used espoused a 4-4-2 with Renedy Singh being played as an unorthodox creative midfielder, a role he isn’t accustomed to, whilst Mehtab Hossain participated as the midfield general. CS Sabeeth, a Mohun Bagan loanee, was on call to pummel two into the net as the first half segment ended with the Blasters comfortably in the lead.
James brought on the troika of Iain Hume, Ivan Barisic and Nigerian Penn Orji for Sabeeth, Milagres Gonsalves and Renedy respectively to add to the sparkle in the game. The team began to gel well and fluidity was the order of the day as Hume tried an audacious bicycle kick that nearly resulted in a goal. However, just as a cohesive unit was formed, the referee blew for the second segment to end.
James used the tactical break to put Michael Chopra, Brazilian winger Pedro Gusmao and Spaniard Victor Forcada, in a side that enjoyed tactical flexibility between a 4-3-3 and a 3-4-3. Chopra, miles away from match-fitness, added to the score-line twice to make it an easy rout for the Blasters.
“It was a promising performance from the blasters. They have a good set of overseas players. The team will get better once they play more and star names play from the start,” elucidated an excited  I M Vijayan to theNew Indian Express.
